Red House Pizzeria Again. Always a pleasure!

Again, we hit up the Red House for amazing half-price deals. This time:
Housemade Sausage - roasted red peppers, mozzarella, parmesan, and marinara sauce.

Roasted Chicken - goat cheese, roasted red peppers, mozzarella, pesto, and tomatoes

Both delicious. The crust was slightly different this time, but I still love this place.

Double Dave’s and US futbol FAIL

Double Dave’s is right around the corner in an ugly as hell brown brick strip plaza with opaque black tinted windows.

Had lunch with the cousin here. This place rolls buffet style. There’s a few things you have to know about pizza buffets:

  • Obliterate any expectations. You’re just here to chow down and crush hunger.
  • Like with any buffet’s, skip the salad bar and reserve space for the heftier delicacies

That being said, there’s only a few other pizza joints that offer buffets: Pizza Hut, CiCi’s, Chinese buffets (you know, near the quesadilla and dinasaur chicken nuggets section AKA “american cuisine”). They are all in the same vain…you come in with a big indulgent smile and exhilirated about the many possibilities of chomping away pizza. Gradually, about a half hour later…you have this sly face and heavy eyes and feel like a weighted statue. Can’t get up. Just need to sit for a few. You then tell yourself “i can do one more slice” and you get up for the last pepperoni slice and you powder on the parmasean. You barely get to the crust, and then your head bobs over. And you now you’ve crosssed the threshold into “I feel like CRAP.” Congratulations on your pizza buffet, sir.

In other news, US just lost to Brazil in Confederations Cup.

Yaghi’s NY Pizza South

Yahgi’s is very close to my place, about 3 minutes drive. So gotta checkout my neighborhood pizzerias. It’s a chill plaza storefront ambience with stools along walls, with framed pictures of just their pizza and advertising.

I went basic and chose the Margherita and cheese slice.

No fountain drinks, and so no tap water. Doh. Friendly staff!

Plenty of pizza by the slice, compared to more well-known places like homeslice. I think they had like eight pies out on stand, good for sampling if you just go in for lunch for two.

Fairly priced (about 5.50 for the two slices)

Outer crust perimeter really thin, unsubstantial but get more area for pizza. Makes Eating crust not as fun. I know the crust can kind of be a separate meal (save em all up till the end, some people do)

The Margherita is handsome looking. Mix of cheese and bufallo mozzarella (need more though!) and cherry tomatoes like they do at east side pies.

Crust almost good, but too chewy like dominoe’s. But taste is all there.

Could work on sauce dept, they were parsimonious on the cheese slice.

Could very well in my tops in austin!

Home Slice Plain Cheese

The slices here seem to get better each time. Just another sunny day in Austin, and your pizza stays warm when you eat outside! (although you’ll probably be sweating in the heat of summer)

Austin Pizza

Had a 10″ pepperoni. Overall, the taste reminds me of Hungry Howie’s, which I loved as a kid growing up in Michigan. Austin’s pizza has a great selection of specialty pizzas, all named after iconic landmarks in ATX, such as “Barton springs”. The pizza defnitely has a “chain” feel and taste to it. By which I mean, soft crust, oily and spongy in places, tasty sauce and ingredients. Like I said, it’s kind of a cross between hungry howie’s and pizza hut minus the flavored crusts. This combination I know some people would love. For me, I’d prefer CraigO’s for local chain-type pizza.

Whole Foods Date Fail

dscn6269_rotated- Didn’t pay for the girl’s meal. Whoops.

- She buys some giant water bottle. It’s a six serving bottle, good for hiking. Maybe overkill for lunch.

- First thing…She didn’t look anything like I remembered her when we were out with her friends. I don’t mean this in a bad way, I just had this initial look of confusion. She looks like a more petite Kirsten Dunst, and had these cute shoes on.

- We see this really cute dog, and she keeps saying how she wants one. Eventually we start talking about pets. I bust out my phone and show her a photo of this stray kitten I saw outside of work one time. Then show her one of my friends cats who gives way too much attention. She made some comment about me really liking cats – which I don’t, i just happended to have pcs of them on my phone recently. I joked and said I had this cat fetish and like to line them all up on my bed. She smiled. But I think it was borderline creepy. Whatevs.

- I love the rooftop patio area of whole foods. There’s two ways to get there, the stairs outside, or the elevator in the back area. I tell the girl like it’s some sort of secret that few know about, and try to be slick about it. Made some lame comment on a tattoo she had on her right arm as we waited for the elevator. As shaft opened, I realized after the fact that taking her to this isolated back area probably came across as creepy. Whoops. So we get into the elevator for some akwardness as we debated on whether to go to floor “M” or “P”. We pressed both. M took us one floor up indoors. Ahhh…”mezzanine”. “P” is supposed to take us to patio. Cool. The door opens and….for some reason we end up back on the lower floor we came through! WTF?! Taking-girl-to-nice-rooftop-view FAIL. Well not really, we took the stairs outside. But everything felt sloppy.

- She likes shade, and was almost flip-happy about seeing some tables hidden from the sun. Maybe she’s some half-vampire and fizzles under the sun, I don’t know. She does love the Twilight series.

- I’ve learned that it’s important to have fun, and teasing of the girl here and there can make things fun and flirty. And shows you don’t take things too seriously. It’s what guys who are good with women do naturally. But for me it’s not immediately natural, and so …well, it just comes out un-natural. Leading to awkward moments….gotta love those!

- We finish up our meal, and the girl seems somewhat eager to leave. Well, this has been a date FAIL so can’t blame her. We head down the first set of slanty escalators leading to the parking garage. Did I tell you I don’t have great balance and that whoever invented these inclined escalators should be shot? You have to do this leaning back with your body that is totally skewed from proper body mechanics. It makes carrying bags of groceries on both your arms so much more difficult. I can’t imagine what it’s like for girls wearing any kind of heels or stilletos. A better idea might have been to have a slip-n-slide. It’s faster, funner, and keeps you cool. Whatever though. She asks me where I parked and I replied “second floor”. We get of the first set of escalators and she attempts to say bye. But, by “second floor” i meant second parking garage floor, which she thought as third floor. So akwardly I explained myself, and we proceed to head down the second set of escalators after already saying a partial goodbye. Awkward. Haha, whoops. At the bottom, we finally part. But I’m just thinking…”ok, this date’s over. Let’s get out of here.”

Til next time, pizza friends.

It took me awhile to finally get some friends to House Pizzeria. Mike Sutter at the Austin Statesman gave some high marks to this joint on Airport Blvd. The recent hot press meant longer waits. It took a little over an hour to get our pizza. Hot damn.

Despite the wait, server was super friendly. We chose to sit outside on the benches and was deep into nightfall when we finished our food. Four pizzas here. The winner was the “Blue Pizza” with sausage added. Crust was great, check out the charring on the bottom! Was looking forward to the margherita, but was just ok. All good pizzas. Oh, and get the root beer!

Hoboken Pie Dual Wield

Got two slices at the Hoboken. Now, these hardly look “fresh-out-the-oven”. But I don’t know what it is about pizza, but they make damn fine leftover meals. After these two slices came out re-heated, they tasted delicious. This was interesting, because the first experience wasn’t superb. Meaning, there might be inconsistencies. On the good days however, I loves me some Hoboken.
